The other thing that was spot-on in this film was the fact that everyone, everywhere, was smoking buy cigarettes. At home, at the office, on the street, at the club. Smoking was an accepted fact of life. So much so that Kate doesnТt even blink an eye before lighting up when sheТs supposedly pregnant in the movie. My mother was the same. She smoked through her entire pregnancy with me, although she did abstain from alcohol. Somewhat. Well IТm pretty sure she did. But the cigarettes were ubiquitous.
I can still remember their faces when they smoked. Ugly and distorted. And the filthiness of ashtrays everywhere, and their disdain of me for not wanting to touch them. They both made fun of me for thinking that smoking was gross.
УDonТt touch it! YouТll get CANCER OF THE FINGERS!Ф they would say sarcastically after telling me to bring them a pack of cigarettes story.
Because of the constant stink of tobacco, on their breath, their clothes, the furniture, blankets, towels and sheets, I didnТt want to cuddle with either of them very much. Let me rephrase that. I didnТt cuddle with my dad at all. I wanted to cuddle with my mother sometimes, but was hard-pressed to find a cigarette-free time to do so, and after a while I gave up.
Another blow to cigarettes online story has occured in New Haven, now that city officials have allowed Yale New Haven Hospital to ban smoking in certain areas in and around the hospital, including, apparently, some public sidewalks.
Any thoughts on this decision out there?
Hospitals are places that sick people go to try to get better, so I can see why smoking would be banned on the grounds and inside the hospital buildings. The Connecticut Hospital Association began a campaign last year, urging its member hospitals to ban smoking by next November.
But on public sidewalks?
After years of waitressing in smoke-filled bars and restaurants and a short stint at smoking myself, I no longer like to be be near cigarette smoke and I don’t appreciate the mess some smokers leave behind when they pitch their butts on the ground.
But stupid or not, the right to smoke outside and in public is still an individual right. Last I checked, smoking cigarettes is not against the law.
